John Davidson will return to the The Fantasticks as Bellomy on December 1 at off-Broadway's Snapple Theater Center. The actor played Henry during a recent summer engagement, and previously starred as Matt in the 1964 television adaptation of the musical.
Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, The Fantasticks tells the story of two neighbors, Bellomy (Davidson) and Hucklebee (Dan Sharkey). The old men put up a wall between their homes to ensure their son and daughter—knowing children always do the opposite of what their parents say—fall in love. When the young lovers discover the plan, they both leave to explore the world separately before returning to one another again. The Fantasticks includes a score of memorable songs including “They Were You,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” and “Try to Remember.”
Davidson is best known as the host of TV’s One Hundred Thousand Dollar Pyramid and The New Hollywood Squares. On Broadway, he has appeared in Oklahoma, State Fair and Foxy. Davidson’s additional theater credits include L’il Abner, The Music Man, Camelot, 110 in the Shade and Carousel.
The Fantasticks also currently stars Aaron Carter, Ron Bohmer, Tom Flagg, Heidi Giberson, Matt Leisy, Addi McDaniel, Michael Nostrand and Richard Roland.
